Record Your Story

Kickstart Your Memory Machine

Ever thought about journalling your epic life story?

Picture this: Turning your life's blooper reel and highlight moments into an eternal family treasure chest!

It all starts with one memory at a time, but let’s break down how this journey from brain to book actually happens.

Step 1: Store & Access

First up, figure out where your stash is
Your collection of texts, images, voice memos, and possibly embarrassing home videos. Choose a method that won’t leave your future self or tech-savvy grandkids puzzled about how to access these gems. Ensure you can print a hard copy of the text and images too!

Step 2: Sharing (Or Not!)

Think about who gets the VIP pass to your life’s backstage
The decision on what goes in the journal might hinge on who's reading it - whether it's immediate family now or distant relatives centuries later. Maybe save those stories about wild teenage escapades for a time when they can be appreciated, not scandalised.

Step 3: Create a Timeline & Summary Memories

Map out your life in five major chapters:
For each chapter, jot down a summary memory, where & whom you were living with and a little about the era: Were bellbottoms in fashion? Were Wham in the charts?
These will be the foundation of your book of life, narrating your story across time!

Step 4:  Memory Themes

 Pinpoint 20 milestone memories
Those make-or-break moments or just plain weird experiences that define you. Each memory gets a title, but keep it simple; ‘The Great Jello Incident’ will suffice. Not all memories are sunshine - some are the thunderstorms that shaped you.

Step 5: Capture the Chaos

Time to dig out your relics

Got relics from the past like old photos, cringy love letters, or VHS tapes? Time to dig them out:

  • Scribble, type, or babble into a voice app.
  • Use speech-to-text if you’re not the fastest typist.
  • Digitally enhance those faded Polaroids to bring them back to HD life.
  • Upgrade those old home movies from grainy to grand with some digital magic.
We do not remember days, we remember moments. The richness of life lies in the memories we have forgotten." ~ Cesare Pavese

Word or Google Document
You've started with a Word or Google document and found you can’t really add voice recordings or video clips! It's frustrating isn't it?
Digital Storage & File System
You've tried setting up a file system - for you or someone else - to store life stories & family history in, but it's just disjointed and a bit of a mess!

Guard Memories Against Time & Technology

Avoid these common pitfalls to preserve your precious moments...

Fading Photos, Old Film & VHS Tapes

You have old photo albums with pictures that are beginning to fade or lose their colour and a ton of old movies that are difficult to play. You are at risk of losing these images for ever.

Social Media Memory Trap

Relying solely on social media to keep your memories safe? Think again. A single hack or account deletion could wipe out all your treasured moments and a heap of reels forever.

Storage Nightmares

Ever lost a memory stick, SD card or found an old computer's hard drive inaccessible? Storing digital copies of your documents, photos, and videos can lead to unexpected losses.

Boxed Up History Hazzard

Storing special cards, kids' creations, and family memorabilia in boxes not only makes them hard to access but also exposes them to damage from moisture, pests, or decay.

Digital Dilemma

Using multiple storage spots for your digital memories? This can lead to confusion and disorganisation, making it hard to find your favorite moments and overwhelming for others because of an excess of unsorted media.

Heritage Hoarding

Capturing family stories is always on your to-do list, nestled between ‘learn to fly’ and ‘master quantum physics’. Consequently, these stories remain locked in people's heads, at risk of being lost forever with their last breath.
